The Official Site of the 2022 Taiwan Lantern Festival in Kaoshiung

WEIWUYING

Lantern Zone

For decades isolated from the outside world by a towering stone wall, Weiwuying has always been an enigmatic and secluded spot, despite its proximity to downtown Kaohsiung. Formerly a military base, even after several regime changes it remained a mystery to those living nearby. After World War II, thousands of conscripts underwent tough training here, turning young men into mentally- and physically-strong warriors.

Around the time it was decided that the base was no longer suitable for military use, environmentalism was taking hold in Taiwan. The site was converted into an eco-friendly metropolitan park, becoming a “green lung” for the metropolis. Yet traces of its previous role have been preserved, to bear witness to the past and highlight the city’s remarkable progress.

Tear down the high wall together; transcend geographical and cultural barriers.Let us transform and redefine a brand new Kaohsiung!

Kaohsiung is home to diverse ethnic groups. Kaohsiung’s population includes Chinese mainlanders, Holo settlers, Hakka, indigenous groups, and new immigrants, most of whom come from from Southeast Asia. People from different ethnic backgrounds are working together for peaceful coexistence and common prosperity. With the merger of Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County, administrative boundaries have disappeared.Located at the junction of the old city area and Fongshan, Weiwuying soon emerged as the “central park” of Kaohsiung. The establishment of the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts has made it possible for Kaohsiung to scale new heights in cultural and artistic development.

From the “old Weiwuying” to the “new central park,” the transformation has been tremendous, so let your imagination of Kaohsiung run wild!

Thanks to joint efforts, Weiwuying has transcended its original limits and become an eco-friendly metropolitan park. The arts center is exerting a significant influence on ecological education, art, culture, tourism, and recreation, making it a leading attraction in Kaohsiung.

In 2022, the “new central park” comes into existence, and bids farewell to its military past. It is well on its way to becoming a flagship cultural destination in Asia. This time, because Kaohsiung’s vision is not constrained by artificial restrictions, the lantern show will not be divided into specific areas based on different themes. As intertwining light and shadow illuminate the once-secluded area, citizens will grasp a better understanding of Kaohsiung, and see this metropolis in a brand new light.

A woven bamboo boat symbolizes the skill with which Austronesian peoples can utilize marine resources. The objects are independent yet interrelated; each has its own hidden cultural image. The ethnic voices (in the form of songs or greetings) feature interesting rhythms. Despite their differences, they all succeed in making Austronesian people feel familiar and kindly. Through this work, the artist wants to present images of life that show how closely people are related to each other in their souls, songs, and voices — even though they have migrated to different places, and cultural boundaries have emerged between various ethnic groups.

  • 南島之眼 Mata of Austronesia2

    The Rukai, Taiwan/安聖惠(峨冷.魯魯安)Eleng Luluan

In the language of the Rukai indigenous people, Mata means “eyes.” The word is common to many South Pacific island communities, and acts as an umbilical cord binding Austronesian peoples all over the world from ancient times to the present. The bright sparkling flame in the middle of this work is encircled by an array of eye-shaped braided irons, analogous to the fire being ignited in people’s eyes. It also simultaneously interprets the lily “petals,” reflecting on the gradual loss of tradition that the Rukai and other Austronesian peoples are experiencing in the modern world. However, fire brings the possibility of continuation of life, and it serves as a connection with ancestors and as a medium for cohesion among people. It is hoped that the ritual of fire helps connect and unite people, overcome obstacles, and carry forward the spirit of traditional culture.

The artist has attempted to capture the swaying of natural landscapes, as well as their visible and invisible textures and imprints. The fragrant breeze is a metaphor for the simplicity and purity of the Austronesian peoples and their eco-friendly approach to life. Nature is a profound mystery, and it shapes humanity’s most precious life stories. We need to embrace environmentalism and sustainability if we are to relish such fragrant breezes ourselves.

Li Wun-guang (also known as Hai Shu-er) has dedicated himself to Namasia District’s Nayaomasia-style pottery for a long time. He has been creating a crowd of figures singing “Pasibutbut” (the Bunun people’s sophisticated polyphonic vocal music), each with different lip shapes and facial expressions. The song comes from an out-of-print soundtrackrecorded at Mingde, an indigenous community in Nantou County, in 1993. Matched with dolls made of wild grass and burnt leaves, the rich colors match the sound and light to form a charming scene.

The artist has collected stories, documents, and videos of various groups, in order to discover the core values of various cultures, then expressed these cultural characteristics and family connections in paintings.By composing colorful images of ethnic groups, and using totem-designed lighting and weaving to demonstrate the spirit of Taiwan’s 16 indigenous ethnic groups, the artist leads viewers to an understanding of the different characteristics of each tribe.

Utilizing weaving techniques inherited from Kanakanavu culture, and inspired by the tribe representative ’umpuruku (“sharing bag”), Nawu tries to find her own position as a female within culture, life, and creation. The ideas behind the work come from the millet-rice dumplings in the “sharing bag,” which extend from the ethnic group’s bamboo baskets to the treetops, and are connected with the banyan trees to form a beam of light. Through breathing, land, and colonial buildings, they combine their own breath, female bodies, ethnic voices, and art installation to create an eerily dazzling lantern world.

In this work, the artist imagines that in Weiwuying’slotus pond, during the chilly winter, animals from the mountains and forests can relax, take a soothing bath, and interact harmoniously in a whimsical world. Observe the animals’ different postures and expressions, and you will appreciate how comfortable and satisfied they are.

The artist spreads the net from the lotus pond and the treetops to the edge of the lake, using the concept of “light” to weave a fantasy world of fluttering silver grass flying in the air. Viewers will feel that the lantern’s different materials move, turn, and intertwine with one another in the air, radiating gleams of dazzling light. The romantic ambience is similar to that of a spider’s web on the grass at first light, reflecting the hazy beauty of crystal-clear morning dew. However, for visitors the reality is that of a tranquil evening at the lantern festival.

After initially being designed for a commission in Japan in 2017, Arc ZERO has taken on many forms and been installed in 8 different countries. I’m delighted to have the first permanent edition created and installed here in Kaohsiung.

This version – the “Eclipse” uses the reflection in the water to create a full circle, a symmetrical ring of mist which glows like fire at night. The Eclipse hovers in space, ignoring the landscape’s horizon and creates a profound perceptual experience for the viewer. Water and light are the two main elements in all my work and the harmony of these materials in the Eclipse is quite special - it is amazing that such common materials can appear so magical. This magic is achieved simply by allowing the elements of the work (water, light and air, or wind) to be themselves, and not try to control or manipulate them with too much technology. This allows the site to express itself to the viewer – through the work.

Weiwuying Metropolitan Park’s North Lake is an ideal venue for light and shadow performances. Multiple layers of light, in the form of sparkling forest reflections on the surface of the languid water, will be the design focus of the light and shadow theater. Due to its elegant setting, North Lake radiates an ambiance of fantasy and magnificence through vibrant colors and gentle waves. At the same time, the dense tree canopy forms a deep natural corridor. The delicacy of the light makes visitors feel as though they are in the time tunnel with seasonal changes. This perfect combination of light and tree shadows draws visitors into a natural “Dome of Light.”

Flowers and plants shine with glistening light; it looks as if they have beating hearts, just like humans. These plant-like lanterns, scattered across the grass, sway with the wind. Their iridescent luster and rhythmic shimmering creates a sea of crystal lights similar to an ocean wave. The “Green Revolution” initiated when Weiwuying was repurposed was intended to help children get closer to nature, so urban residents could embrace their dreams of greenery. To reflect this kind of commonly-felt euphoria, these works have been given a dynamic and vivid title:“Lighting Flowers.” Recognizing that our longing for greenery is built upon glimmers of light, the creators hope to extend that promise and elation. These bionic flowers symbolize hopes being implanted in the Earth, seeds of “green dream upon glimmering lights,” and “the moral behind lighting flowers.” At the same time, they hint at the future of artificial plants, representing a convergence of environmental protection, agricultural biotechnology, ecology, and humanity.

The green dreamscape that is Weiwuying Metropolitan Park has important ecological functions. When the area ceased to be a military base, it was converted into an urban oasis where residents canrest in the shade while enjoying green spaces and grassy slopes. Fungi, the most commonly seen organisms in Weiwuying’s forest, are an important part of the local ecosystem.

Highlighting the forest’s mushrooms will cause people to change the way they perceive Weiwuying, and help them experience the area’s rich and complex ecology. Mushrooms of different sizes thrive here. During the daytime, they hide in the greenery. But when night falls, they shine and shimmer, and it seems they move with a rhythm, as if breathing. They cease breathing when you get close to them, holding their breath as if they are shy, and hiding their light until you retreat. As you stroll in the heart of the forest, interacting closely with nature, you will feel that you have been reborn as a forest elf.

The woods in Weiwuying Metropolitan Park seem to pulse with the life of the city. Towering trees and lush foliage harmonize with the breath of Kaohsiung. When night falls, the forest’s secret life emerges, and the light outlines the vigorous soul and flowing life of woodlands. Light creates lines, and that is the way life flows, depicting the most authentic and natural look of the metropolis, incorporating the original appearance of nature and topography.

Through the use of glimmering light, the artistspresent beautiful natural contours at night, to reveal the forgotten life and beauty concealed by the dark. You cannot but stop and observe, and listen to the messages conveyed by nature, whilefeeling the omnipresent flow of energy. This force drives the vitality of our metropolis. A powerful and endless magic power shapes Kaohsiung's image as a glittering yet lushly green city.

Electricity, as a fundamental source of energy in the 21st century, is often invisible and taken for granted by people. We imagine how, before the 20th century, human eyes witnessed this tremendous energy source in its natural form of lightning. More than a century later, when electrical systems and appliances have become fundamental infrastructure in every town and city, how do we perceive the changes brought about by artificial light at night? High Voltage hides in the vast darkness, and its abrupt appearance inspires us to rethink the link between nature and light, in an era when we are balanced between civilization and catastrophe.

Pulse visualizes the emotional states of immigrants when they enter a new realm. It appears to be still, yet sometimes beats harshly and sometimes expresses slowly. Migrating to a new environment has all kinds of feelings, including hope, excitement, nervousness, fear, and joy. There are many to expect during the process, difficulties to deal with, and challenges to face. These emotional waves are critical elements of a new journey, yet unable to share with new neighbors. Therefore, in the theme of new immigrants, we express the emotional condition with digitalized lighting and music with the surface of the metamorphosed pulse wave.

“Aerial Being” has been produced in varying sizes ranging from 1 meter to 30 meters, inflated using air from numerous locations around the world. From something small on a molecular level to a vast size that encompasses the air within the atmosphere, envisioned as an ideal is the manifestation of beings that are omnipresent and transcend scales perceivable by human beings.

“Kuuki” which is the word for “air” in Japanese, harbors meanings such as the emotions of the people who are there, as well as the atmosphere. While elusive and ephemeral, it is an ambiguous concept that at times can exert a highly dominant sense of power within society.

“Aerial Being” is perhaps a mediating presence that while is something familiar, can lead us to consider things we often are not particularly aware of. One realizes in the first place, that it is only natural for a balloon to inflate with air invisible to the eye, so much so, that no one today thinks it to be anything out of the ordinary.

Perhaps “Aerial Being” is like an afterimage, or traces of a presence that comes to our minds after leaving the place where we had once seen it before our eyes. It harbors within it the atmosphere of the place, and invites the people who have gathered there to participate in its landscape. Blending into its surrounding environment due to its transparency, it serves to transform familiar places into fresh scenery that extends beyond context and meaning.

Combining the song’s melody with light sparkling on the chrysanthemum field, he imagines himself as a commander, ordering the chrysanthemums to grow well, so he can sell them at a good price. This song has a special place the history of Taiwanese music. The cash crops that accompanied us through the first half of the 20th century are now merely the memory of an earlier generation, while the sea of electric chrysanthemums on both sides of the highway also celebrates the many people who moved from the south to the north in search of better job opportunities. Taiwan's traditional crafts and cultural skills, honed over many generations, are at the center of this lantern’s design. Local craftsmanship and innovative imaging are combined with traditional lighting arts. Inspired by both tradition and innovation, lighting and graphic artists have collaborated to create a fresh feeling.

Main lantern - The achievement of art through the generationsThe main lantern draws upon the beauty of industrial arts and their generation. It highlights the strength of items such as screws, nuts and bolts. At another level, the design highlights the theme of how we are all connected and depend upon each other.
One of the famous elements of industrial art in Kaohsiung consists of screws made in Gangshan. The creators use the techniques of metal art to show the beauty of screws. These are even used in interactive ways. The Tourism Bureau’s mascot, “Oh Bear,” is present to lift spirits and honor professionals in the industrial arts.
Wooden wheels represent one of Kaohsiung’s master woodcarvers, Teacher Yeh. Bamboo sieves are a special industrial art in Gangshan. Also on hand are Hakka oil-paper umbrellas with flower designs and geometric shapes that represent the three mountains of Kaohsiung. LED and metal arts supplement the creations. Nearby is an interactive shadow play. The wheels are like suns shining over the land of Taiwan and the entire world.
Entrance Lantern Group – the Success of the CraftspeopleTraditional painting on buildings and other types of architecture is one of the arts found in Taiwan. Temples and houses frequently are adorned by such paintings. The design of this lantern represents the gate of a traditional temple, inviting everyone to enter. Visitors can take photos of themselves in front of the gate and with a traditional Kaohsiung local artist, Mr. SuJiaxian. The lantern highlights a fusion between painter and lantern artist, together creating a beautiful work of art.Little Boy and the KilnThe Qijin and Sanhe kilns in Kaohsiung’s Dashu District have become global brands. Among their products are red brick classical grills for windows. In this lantern, the apprentice is focused on guarding the kiln fire. The goldfish seems to be in a trial of fire, and looks as if it is swimming out of the porcelain. This highlights the concept of ““aspiration and hard work to learn art.””Hand Fighting between PuppetsPuppet shows became very popular forms of public entertainment in Taiwan in the 1950s. They expressed the touching passion and traditional culture of southern Taiwan. Over time, puppet shows moved from the stage to films such as ““Yunzhou Great Hero Shi Yanwen.”” Over the years, these performances have become an important part of Taiwan’s traditional culture, and they are dear to the heart of many people. The lantern also highlights the transition of puppet shows from the old to the new, allowing people of all ages to feel the warmth and charm of this traditional skill.Happy BambooBamboo weaving was a necessary part of daily life in old Taiwan. It was used in clothing, housing and food storage. A traditional handmade bamboo shop is still in operation on Kaohsiung’s Wufu 4th Road. Skills of masters have been handed down for generations to the present day. Weaving bamboo by hand remains a traditional craft in Kaohsiung.Beautiful Edge of LightKaohsiung’s ““Guo Chang-Xi Weapons Art Gallery”” is currently the only cultural and educational museum in Taiwan that presents a history of swords and related items. It provides an interactive platform for inheriting traditions. The exhibits show traditional skills such as those of blacksmiths, as well as weapons from the “Songjiang team” of Neimen.Shadow ChiselWood carving is a traditional craft that is rather distinct from carpentry. Working with the wood, it takes much skill to transform the original material into a work of art. This lantern’s design uses various means to highlight the beauty of wood carving.Auspicious FortuneThe Chinese word for “gourd” sounds auspicious, as it is similar to words that can mean “flowing,” which leads to good things such as prosperity. Also, gourds contain many seeds, symbolizing the bounty of many offspring. They are beautiful as well. Decorating and carving gourds is a popular activity in Taiwan. This lantern’s design communicates the idea of ““five blessings come to the door.”” It highlights the skill and beauty of this artform. The Use of Screws to Create ArtKaohsiung’s Gangshan district is the world’s second-largest screw exporter, and it is known as the “kingdom of screws.” Many people make special trips to see Taiwan’s screw installation art. In this design, screws and nuts create an animated robot. This symbolizes the union of industrial art and technology, and the combination of metal art with the lantern tradition.Bright and Colorful UmbrellasOil-paper umbrellas are the most famous handicraft of Meinong. The multiple characters on the umbrella symbolize prosperity. These umbrellas were frequently used as a dowry when daughters were married.Yellow Butterfly, a little girl with a blue blouse, is a feature of Meinong. She’s joined by a little tiger and a turtle. A frog has jumped on the top of the umbrella and is singing and dancing with the yellow butterflies.Curving Light and ShadowShadow play is a unique tradition in Kaohsiung, and an intangible cultural asset. The shadow play stage is built with ox carts. Everyone is invited to experience the times beginning in the 1940s when shadow plays were very popular in Taiwan. Musical instruments, such as gongs and drums, are a critical part of this artform, and help the audience feel the beauty of this ancient light and shadow art.Hundreds of CraftsmenOn this lantern, lines form large and small waves on the surfaces of small umbrellas. The real-time display of the interactive contents of “leaving your meta-messages” on the façade of the 85 Sky Tower vividly conveys the image of Kaohsiung as a technology capital. Combining traditional lanterns with interactive multimedia, this installation radiates a cross-disciplinary aura and a great deal of innovative energy.Digital PulsesThe future of high-tech industries is intimately bound up with the Metaverse. Nonetheless, amid new technical exploration and invention, circuit boards and electronic components of all stripes not only remain indispensable, but are even valued as “makers’ magic artifacts” by geeks. This lantern is modeled on a DJ turntable and drum machine. Visitors can interact with the drum machine on the stage, thereby producing various rhythmic sounds and lighting effects. The co-created tempos are as cool as they are dazzling, and will spark everyone’s fertile imagination.Emoji PartyWith the advancement of the Internet, we often send messages to friends and relatives through social media. In addition to text messages, our tones and feelings may find expression in emojis. The combination of five emojis can even serve as an avatar ID in the Metaverse. This light installation takes the form of emojis in frequent use, which also represents geeks’ ID on the Internet. The installation will give visitors a few surprises when they photograph it with an IG Filter.Source of emojis: Twitter CC-BY-4.0Hyper-sensory SpaceFacebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that he will spare no effort to build a Metaverse, which has helped makes virtual reality (VR) and the Metaverse popular topics. This light installation is a traditional lantern in the shape of a geek wearing a head-mounted display, while revealing part of the internal structure to introduce traditional lantern crafts to viewers. It also employs images to present “Metaverse: Hyper-sensory Space,” a mesmerizing blend of Kaohsiung’s tourist attractions and the visual techniques of digital technology, aiming to unveil daily Kaohsiung in the digital Metaverse. When visitors enter, they step into a digital realm which offers them an immersive virtual experience. The Optical PhantomWith the advent of the Metaverse, 3D scanning has become an important technology to help bring the real into the virtual. This installation simulates the scanning process via interaction and audiovisual effects. When visitors step onto the central pedestal, a light beam will move as programmed, showing the scanning process together with the “clicking” sound and flashing light. This indicates that the visitor’s figures have been recorded. Then the visitor’s appearance will be displayed on the screen with pixelated effects.Entering the Virtual WorldIn the future, people will be able to log into the Metaverse with their respective avatars, and these will express their personalities. This lantern takes the form of an infinite tunnel in coordination with lighting effects and interactive experiences, thereby creating an ambience reminiscent of the entrance to the virtual world. When the visitors approach the entrance, the screen inside the tunnel will capture the visitor’s figures and display them as their avatars with pixelated visual effect. The visitors can wave their hands to themselves over the display, which embodies the concept of real-virtual co-existence.Dimensional BreakFor novelty-oriented geeks in a maker spirit, a 3D printer is an essential tool in amid their creative paraphernalia. This light installation is designed in the shape of a 3D printer which comprises two parts. At the top is an LED screen showing a 3D-printed animation that features “The Year of the Tiger” and Kaohsiung’s famous attraction “The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas.” By dint of autostereoscopy, this installation allows viewers to see lifelike 3D images from a specific angle. The lower part is a translucent showcase which will be lit up at the coda of the animation, bringing viewers a diverse visual delight.
