Love River, the most romantic waterway in Kaohsiung, flows through the heart of the metropolis in the name of love. The river has accompanied the city throughout its development, nurturing local features and cultures. Love River Bay is playing a pivotal role in the merger of the harbor and the city. Tearing down the barriers between Kaohsiung and its port is fueling local growth, and empowering the metropolis to embrace the world with passion and courage.

Kaohsiung has always been known as a harbor city, and for most of its history, the Port of Kaohsiung was centered around Love River’s estuary. The old port area boasts breathtaking and spectacular river, harbor, and mountain views under a blue serene sky. Love River integrates Kaohsiung’s memories, cultural beliefs, industrial development, and municipal character. All of these elements continuously merge with one another, just as the river flows endlessly to the sea.

The removal of the wall that separated the city and the harbor has broadened people’s horizons and opened their minds.

The Port of Kaohsiung and the city are integrated and cooperating. Love River Bay is richly endowed with unique geographical and cultural conditions. With the spatial restructuring of the Port of Kaohsiung, the 5G AIoT Innovation Hub has been established, and is poised to lead Kaohsiung’s emergence as a technological smart city. The construction of world-class buildings and infrastructure as well as the development of new policies are shaping Asia’s New Bay Area in Kaohsiung.

In the future — as it was in the past and is in the present — Love River Bay will always be the most representative landmark of Kaohsiung.

Over the past hundred years, countless grand events have been held around the mouth of Love River. It was here that families bade farewell to soldiers sailing to Kinmen and Matsu. From the river’s banks, citizens have cheered dragon boat teams competing in races.

We reversed the fate of once-idle old warehouses in the port area. We welcomed the grand opening of Kaohsiung Music Center. We celebrated the city’s glorious centenary with a dazzling fireworks display on National Day.

In 2022, we still stand tall here. We go hand in hand with the world, ready to glow in the harbor city’s night sky. Dazzling lanterns radiate an ambience of fantasy and magnificence. Glowing light shines on the languid waters, illuminating the bay, throwing out golden sparkles. The image of a resplendent and vibrant waterfront is going to write one of the most indelible and glorious chapters of the charismatic city!

    In all the creation stories, the world starts from the moment when the “light” was born. Thus, aesthetics is the act of humans trying to pursue “Auro” through artistic creation. The exhibition “ENLIGHT” attempts to explore the essence of the aesthetics experience of “light” through different interpretations from artists. In which they present the aesthetics shape of “light” that invite viewers to delve into the relationship between the spirit of “light” and the creativity of art.

    Shen Chao-Liang’s “Stage” series, Chung Soon-Long's “Stardust” series and Peng Yi-Hang’s “Noise” show distinct aspects of photography in different generations. The “Stage” series, a documentary photography focuses on the unmanned Taiwanese Electric Flower Cars, refines the contradictive moment that is fully worldly yet transcends human spirit at the same time. “Stardust” is a galaxy composed by raindrops. In artist’s sensibility, the rain scene reconstitutes into a starry sky that only belongs to images. “Dark Light” forms its own image manifestation as the photosensitive element continues to heat up, emerging the spiritual transcendence of “suprematism.”

    The mechanical installations created by artists Chiu Chao-Tsai and Chen Yi outline the dynamics and sculptural nature of light. Chiu Chao-Tsai’s works point to the physical relationship between “light” and “time,” and also serves as a metaphor in abstract thinking. Chen Yi's “Reproduction of Nature-Taiwan AI Digital Landscape” is re-translated into nature in the mechanical movement of “light”, reappearing the metaphor in the creation myth that “light” is the first creation.

    Contemporary digital interface constitutes the “new reality” of light and image. Wu Tsan-Cheng's “Taiwan Sound Map project” is programmed to become an invisible existence reverberating in the environment, reflecting the natural scene of Taiwan in the image. Chen Wan-jen's “Eigengrau” transforms the contemporary Internet into an immersive, leisurely and waving sea. When the “light” became the “media” that radiated information, mankind turned from looking up at the light beyond the sky to looking down at the light of technology and media.

    The teampiànn-tiûnn’s latest creation pivots around the project ûn-king. The pieces of this artwork pay tribute to Khoo Chiau-eng / Syu Jhao-rong by expressing and honoring his determination in the form of the light art installation ûn-king: Monument for Unknown Taiwanese Veterans. In the static display section, the site of Mr. Khoo’s / Mr. Syu’s suicide will be recreated with contemporary art at the Monument for Unknown Taiwanese Veterans on Cijin Island, where — in an act of protest — he set fire to himself and his car in 2008. For the dynamic performance, his spirit and philosophy are reiterated with car possessions and religious ceremonies. Through the visit of Mr. Wu Jhu-rong (Mr. Khoo’s / Mr. Syu’s foster son) and the staff ofKaohsiung Care Taiwan Veterans Cultural Association, it is hoped that more people can learn about the history of Taiwanese veterans, an episode unrecorded in official textbooks, and discover the stories behind the War and Peace Memorial Park and Theme Hall.

    Close your eyes, make a wish… and whisper it with all your heart! 30 beautiful coloured orbs float above Kaohsiung transforming the plaza into a field of scintillating bubbles lighting up as you murmur your dream to them. LNLO believe in the magical powers of positive thinking: making a wish, having a dream, is already half a reality! Wish Blow symbolises the power of our hopes and dreams. The longer you can express your desires, the further the light travels, and the greater your chance of seeing your wish come true ! Will you have enough willpower and inspiration to light up all 30 orbs ? Wish Blow was first showcased at Lyon Light Festival 2018.

    When the little table is in white color, the audience can speak their wishes to the microphone, and the table will turn orange. The next audience can interact with the work when the desk turns white again.

    The wharf became a giant's fantasy garden, and trumpet flowers grew taller than humans. We shuttled among the flowers, avoiding the threat of being discovered by the giants, looking for the traces of spring. Just like our post-epidemic life, we are cautious, looking for life in the cracks, and never give up hope.

    This seaside garden is composed of 54 giant trumpet flowers ranging in height from 2.5 meters to 6 meters. The music from the flowers allows us to escape the hustle and bustle, forget the troubles, and take us into the dream world like the Peach Blossom Spring. People can’t help but taking the most beautiful photos because the changing colors of the flowers and lights are colorful and dazzling, and the unique scenery of the harbour form a must-visit attraction on the Internet.

    Amigo & Amigo created Octopoda, inviting audiences to become part of his tentacle percussion ensemble. Featuring eight-tentacle drums, each of which activates a unique display of colour and light, animating the Octopoda’s musical mind.

    Inspired by steampunk themes, when all eight drums are playing together Octopoda will dazzle audiences with his mechanical moves and rhythmic light display. Octopoda is a steampunk percussion Octopus. He is an other-worldly lighting installation that engages all ages. Each tentacle is connected to a drum, when played the tentacle illuminates and animates to the drum beat.

    Lighthouses are a key element of harbors and coastlines. Taiwan is surrounded by the ocean, and has a total of 36 lighthouses along its coast and on outlying islands. We have selected 30 lighthouses and recreated them in miniature. They are dotted around the Port of Kaohsiung according to their real-life geological locations. At night, they becomean alliance of lighthouses guarding Taiwan. They also constitute the frontline lantern works of 2022’s Taiwan Lantern Festival, giving people a chance to appreciatethe sense of security that Taiwan’s lighthouses bring to the island day after day.When the 30 lighthouses stand in formation on the pier, they resemble partners taking care of one another. In this pandemic-stricken world, Taiwan’s democratic partners have offered support, and they are analogous to the port’s nighttime lightsthat never go out.

    Exploration is the core of human development. From ancient times to the present, from forest to desert, from inner space to outer space, we have never stopped exploration. Space shuttles drifting in the universe are like submarines roaming deep under the sea, witnessing colorful radiance of different lives in complete silence.

    We all live in a yellow submarine. This inspiration comes from “Yellow Submarine”, a famous song by the Beatles. Through the projection of light and the installation of different interactive spaces, this submarine will take viewers on an exploration journey toward their own Van Buren Supernova.

    Ships drifting on the ocean are like people living on earth or stars in the sky, dispersed sporadically here and there. The Cube is a tranquil cubic universe that reminds viewers of the world in Star Trek.

    In this universe, these spaceships from different corners of the Earth travel across time and space and drift in the vast sea of stars. The teleportation portal at the center transmits your and our thoughts and tells the stories of the galaxy. In this immense universe of infinity, how can we position ourselves? By walking through the interstellar corridors to explore each of the four spaceships, Let’s look upwards at the sky together and find our own place in this universe.

    The Van Buren Supernova is an abstract and yet eternal presence, projecting an image of hope, connection, and new life. Through the deconstruction of containers, we aspire to initiate an exploration of hope. In this work, containers are reconstructed into an abstract structure of space that symbolizes connection with the past and extension into new life.

    This structure serves as The Gate of time and space that connects reality and imagination of each visitor through the projection of light and shadow. In this work, we do not create the Van Buren Supernova for it already exists inside each of us. Instead, we create the gate of time and space leading to it.

    City Gazing Hamasen shows the historic urban area of Kaohsiung city as if you would fly over it at night, with all the street lights, homes and roads lit up. With a special animation, the work lets visitors time travel over the past 100 years, to see how Hamasen has grown from coastal land into the international hub it is today.

    Suspended over the Pier-2 Art Center, the city is turned upside down before the starry sky. In many ways, the moment of experiencing City Gazing Hamasen feels both grand and humble. As VOUW adopts the ‘overview effect’, there is a mental shift in awareness of how fragile life on earth is by exposing oneself to the vastness of the world. This work invites visitors to think more about the future of the city from a humble and sustainable perspective.

    The slinky is familiar to most cultures and generations. Both nostalgic and surrealistic, the artwork playfully transforms its environment into a virtual playground. Each coil of the oversized spring is illuminated in turn to create the familiar flowing form of a slinky tumbling end-over-end into the shadows.

    The oversized scale makes the viewer appear ‘smaller’ and the relationship between viewer, object and space is disrupted. Proportions between you and the ‘toy’ are reversed, as if we have shrunk and somehow ended up in Alice’s Wonderland.

    The installation explores imaginative expressions from the deep sea and its relationship with humans through intricately hand-cut scenes in paper. We play with the scale to capture the vast, mostly unexplored world beneath from giant corals to underwater forests to swarms of jellyfish.

    It's intended to be a portal that invites the viewers to immerse themselves in these worlds and create their own narrative.

    We wanted the lighthouse to be a beacon of hope and happiness especially during these times.

    Countless billboards throw light onto Taiwan's roads. Dynamic neon-lightsbeside an interchange flash with the strength needed for long-distance travel. Streets and alleys are filled by colorful billboards that show the vigor and power of Taiwanese style.

    Artist Li Wun-jheng studies the relationship between billboards, light, and living space. In the seemingly chaotic street scene, each billboard represents citizens’ lives and contains a partial memory of the land. Based on thecheckpoints that once limited access to the harbor, scaffolding is used to reflect local buildings and billboards. Life has never been easy, especially in this time of pandemic. Behind this work lies the hope at the heart of each difficult life. If there is light, there will be livelihood and hope. We will be able to feed our souls, despite the disordered state of the world, and we will be able stoke our fighting spirit and continue to strive.

    Three figures sit next to each other on a bench, displaying the typical characteristics of smartphone users: their heads are bent, fingers typing and swiping, and their faces lit up by their phone screens. While their bodies are physically present, their minds are elsewhere. You can experience the way this affects others by taking a seat in between the figures of Absorbed by Light, designed by the British Gali May Lucas.

    The phone and computer screens that, literally and figuratively, light up our lives are irresistible. We read new messages immediately and want easy access to our social media, useful apps, and browser. Our smartphones are with us all the time – in bed, on the toilet, in the train, at our desk. They are an extension of our contact with our families, friends, and even people on the other side of the world. And as a result, we engage ourselves more with the virtual and superficial reality than with each other and the real world around us, something Lucas makes painfully clear.

    The shape of I evokes the idea of “I” in English. It also bears a resemblance to the crack of a door. It exists as a coordinate in broad daylight. When night falls, the illuminated “I” morphs into a slant of light seeping through the crack of a door: On one side is pure light bathing the Love River and revealing a secret door linking the present and a chimerical future, and on the other side is a vision of the sea and the sky, rekindling memories of a pier once hailed as a lifeline, now cradled in the much evolved modern urbanscape. The Glory Pier, poised on the threshold of imagination, beckons through the night.

    The railway ceased operations many years ago, yet the curved tracks and green grass of Hamasen Railway Cultural Park, adjacent to Penglai Pier-2, preserve the development history of the Port of Kaohsiung.

    Enhancing the scene without damaging the historic infrastructure, thousands of meters of LED light strips have been attached to the century-old train tracks within the seven-hectare park. Artists invited to participate in the creation of Hamasen Light Mission work with program coding and music to create nighttime movements of light inspired by the beautiful arcs of the rail tracks.

    Historical scenes of the past are now illuminated through art. The artistic spirit runs wild, combining modern cityscapes with an historical background to pass down the glory of the old railway from generation to generation.

    The pandemic has forced us to accept all kinds of restrictions, so we are in great need of colorful imagination. Artist Cindy Wang uses neon tubes to make animals withcolors as bright as the rainbow. The shapes are childish yet fantastic with a dazzling visual impact. They attracts everyone's attention, making the place look like a miniature nighttime zoo. The artist named her work Iris Zoo, in the hope that these adorable neon animals can serve as messengers of Iris, the rainbow goddess of Greek myth, and become a rainbow that leads pure souls back to heaven. The vibrant colors of these creatures converges with romantic mythology in a way that stimulates our imagination, and leads us to think more deeply about life and every facet of nature.

    The super-popular Instagram post “Tape Art Movement #TapeArt 2.0 @KAOHSIUNG” recreates distorted space andperception with immersive aesthetics. Welcome to the multi-layered tape universe!

    Kaohsiung Station 2.0 Upgrade and Enhanced Edition has a total of ten independent exhibition areas. In addition to exhibiting new works of the TAPE THAT series, it also brings a richer trompe l’oeil space, fusion mirror house, classic camouflage, ultraviolet world RGB dark-night magic corridor, Tape Art street tour documentary, and a creativity area for exhibition visitors. The new visual design, new spatial composition, and brand-new creation experience allow you to break away from the traditional image of flat tape, and re-examine the possibility of tape art from multiple perspectives.

    Chair Music Sheet, originally created in 2016, ismade up of old chairs from Kaohsiung’s primary and middle schools. One can return to the life forest located in the Pier-2 Dayi warehouse area via the wooden chairs of childhood, experiencing the circumferential universe that documents people’s memories and behaviors.

    Creatively combining Buddhism’s thousand-armed Avalokitesvarawith the lightsabers seen in science-fiction movies, this exhibition, shows the beauty of Kaohsiung’s oceanfront and technology. “Thousand” means immeasurable perfection, and the thousand hands symbolize the ability of the goddess to protect all living beings, as well as her infinite compassion. The lightsaber is a pure gathering of light and energy. This art installation was made by ASE Group, a major semiconductor company in Taiwan. Some 24 robotic arms imported from Germany and a 360-degree LED lightsaber were utilized to form the thousand-armed Avalokitesvara. Program coding, light and shadow curation, as well as music, are in full play to shape an impressive display of light and shadow technology.

    With the professional assistance of ASE engineers, Thousand-Armed Lightsaberallows swordsmanship, martial arts, and modern dance to present the energy of light and shadow through modern technology. It is also a prayer for the post-epidemic era, and thus strikes a certain chord with the public. At the same time, it is a technical achievement that draws together robotics and coding as well as artistry. This depiction of the thousand-armed Avalokitesvara’s awe-inspiring power and sympathy has the power to move those who view it, and help them find tranquility and peace within their hearts.

    Great Tiger Bridge spans 400m from Love Pier to Glory Pier across Love River Bay. It offers visitors a unique chance to take a close look at the work Meta Flow-Light the Island. The ring-shaped structure in the center of the bridge is equipped with a light beam that hits the sky. The color of the beam changes every day according to the results of a voting system. At the same time, the public can enjoy an unprecedented immersive experience by “walking” in among the works.

    “Meta” is the foundation and the beginning, the mystery and the unknown. “Meta” represents the origin and circulation of all living things. It also represents unknown flow and change. Similar to the mechanism of the world, there is action but inaction; like the essence of nature, there is order but disorder. “Meta” is the core idea of this creation; light is used to create the origin, to learn from nature, to describe the trajectory, to connect islands, and to construct the landscape. The Port of Kaohsiung and Love River Bay boast breathtaking natural and manmade scenery. The 11 floating hexagons represent islandsscattered across the sea; light sparkling on the waves gathers imagination and energy to form an archipelago of light. These light-art installations cover over 1,000 square meters of ocean, and are analogous to dazzling reefs; they shine light on the waterfront’s brand-new buildings, to create never-before-seenvistas.
